Chapter Nineteen

ZACH SAW IT IN HER eyes and felt deep in his gut that he and Tina were moving out of the friend zone. She was scared—so was he—but no way was he going to run from what he felt for her any longer. He grabbed a thread of hope and he planned to tie a knot in it and hang on tight.

Thank goodness she came to the Blitz Date. It was the catalyst to propel them forward in their relationship. His only regret was that introducing her to the singles group had resulted in other men seeing in her what he’d seen in her all along. How was he supposed to compete with someone like Dan Cavanaugh, or Casanova Phil, or Gary the dentist? Even Ted, whom she used to loathe when he dated her roommate Paige, had managed to work his way into her heart.

He felt a burning in his chest as she joked and laughed with Gary and everyone around her. She and Shari appeared to have an agreement to shadow each other. Did women use wing women like men had wing men?

He noticed Ted watching the two women flirting shamelessly and harmlessly with Gary Emerson and Dan Cavanaugh. Somehow Ted seemed more put out than Zach was by the flirting. Was he jealous of Shari?

“Are you having a nice time, Zachary?”

Zach jumped slightly at the woman’s voice so close to him. He realized she was his Sunday date. “Meghan. Sorry I didn’t see you. Yes. It’s been a nice day. How about you? Are you enjoying yourself?”

She flashed him a bright smile. “I am. I’m looking forward to our date tomorrow.”

He smiled and nodded as Shanna wedged herself between Meghan and Zach.

“Excuse me, bible girl. He’s on a date with me now,” Shanna said. She turned her head quickly and slapped Meghan’s face with her long, black, ponytail.

Zach frowned at Shanna. Her attitude toward Meghan seemed out of character with the girl he’d grown to respect and admire. Perhaps the stress from losing her job was wearing on her. He felt sorry that she was taking it out on shy, sweet Meghan. He figured it had taken Meghan a lot of courage just to approach him. “I’m looking forward to tomorrow too, Meghan.”

He stepped away from Shanna. “If you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll grab something to eat.” He wandered over to the table covered with containers of the food everyone brought. He was in the mood for something sweet, but all he could find were salads, relish trays, and hummus dips.

He grinned when Tina walked up to him. “Have you ever seen this many vegetables together in one place before?” she asked.

“I know. Didn’t anyone ever hear of bringing a cake or cookies to a picnic?”

Tina pulled a container from her soft cooler. “I was afraid to put this out, given the healthy dishes everyone else brought, but I know it’s one of your favorites.”

Zach’s mouth watered. “Is that Candy Bar Brownie Trifle?”

She laughed. “It is.
